Frequently Asked Questions
An AMA sanctioned motorcycle club in Columbus, Indiana
What is the AMA and why is membership required to race or ride?
As an AMA-sanctioned motorcycle club, AMA membership is required to race or ride at any of our AMA-sanctioned events. Here's why:
- Race Opportunities: AMA-sanctioned events provide a platform for riders to participate in organized races. These events are well-regulated, ensuring fair competition and safety for all riders.
- Safety Standards: AMA-sanctioned events adhere to strict safety standards. By participating, riders benefit from well-maintained tracks, proper safety gear requirements, and emergency protocols.
- Networking and Community: Access to events allows riders to connect with fellow enthusiasts, share experiences, and build a strong motorcycling community.
- Skill Development: Racing at sanctioned events provides an opportunity for riders to improve their skills. Competing against others challenges riders to push their limits and learn from experienced racers.
- AMA Membership Requirement: To participate in AMA-sanctioned events, riders are required to be AMA members. This ensures that participants support the organization's advocacy efforts and contribute to the growth of motorcycling.
You can learn more about AMA membership and its benefits on the AMA website. You can also join or renew your membership directly on the AMA website.
Are there days when riding is open to the public?
Yes, while Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club is private we host a number of AMA-sanctioned race and ride events throughout the year that allow the public access to our over 300 acre riding area. Some regular events that are open to the public include our:
- Championship Hare Scramble Race Series
- Annual Team Race
- Buffaloe Dual Sport and Adventure Rides
- Suspension Tuning and Test Day
We have recently added a Public Trail Ride which allows weekend long access to ride our Hare Scramble track with by-passes available in areas of difficult terrain.
Please remember, we are only open to the public for advertised events. The schedule is on our events page and online registration info can be found on the specific event pages.
How can I be considered for SLMC membership?
In order to become a member at Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club, you must be sponsored by a member to apply. If you do not know anyone at the club, you can come to weekly meetings and scheduled work sessions to make yourself known. Members pay annual dues, but the real commitment is your time in helping to run and maintain the club grounds and supporting club activities. You can learn more on the About Us page.
How do I determine what race class to enter?
See our page on SLMC Race Classes for descriptions of available classes. You should read through the AMA Competition Rulebook and understand all guidelines for class entry. If you still have questions, register online for the class you think most closely matches your bike and skill level and then ask for assistance when checking in at registration. SLMC staff can help you further understand the requirements and, if necessary, move you to a more appropriate race class.
Are Quads, Side by Sides, and ATVs allowed at Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club grounds?
No. We restrict our property to motorcycles only which means we have true single-track racing and riding on our grounds. Please also note that Quads/SxSs/ATVs are not allowed as pit vehicles. No pit riding is allowed.
What time do races start?
The riders meeting for each race starts 15 minutes before the start of the race, and takes place at the start line. Riders need to be lined up in their proper starting rows and ready to race before the rider's meeting starts. The trail to the start line is located at the Southeastern corner of the parking lot, with a large orange wooden arrow hung on a tree beside the trail pointing the way.

Why do I have to go through Tech Inspection/Sound Check?

NOTE: Riders who are not properly scanned through the Tech Inspection/Sound Check Station are not considered to be entered in the race and will not be allowed on the start line. Sound check and registration open at 7:30 AM.
